Anderson, Jill. Los otros dreamers. / Jill Anderson & Nin Solis. Mexico City: Jill Anderson & Nin Solis, 2014. 243 pages. 23 cm. color illustrations. ISBN: 9786070082757
Twenty-six testimonies of young Mexicans who returned to their home country—some deported, some voluntarily repatriated—who had spent most of their formative years in the US, many having been taken there as infants or young children by parents. Narrations tell of unbelievable consequences of having been raised outside of Mexico: lack of family or social support network in Mexico, emotional depression, inability to speak Spanish better than English, obstacles for obtaining national identity papers, bureaucratic non-recognition in Mexico of US education (even to university level), discrimination in workplace, lack of economic opportunities, increased vulnerability to violence, etc. Nin Solis’ color photographs capture the essence of the neighborhoods, homes, and bedrooms to which the contributors returned. Texts mostly in English and Spanish, translated from one language to another; one text also translated to Tsotsil and one also to Ayuujk.
