This is an account of conceptual and historiographical problems that arose in a broader investigation of the railroad in its first phase of construction in Mexico. The period from 1860 to 1890 was chosen because the pieces worked on reflect the period of promotion for the adoption of the railroad and because these images provide unique elements about the means of transportation and their relationship with society. From the point of view of a historian and not a photographer, a series of photos, illustrations and maps about the beginnings of the railroad in Mexico are recovered here, as well as scientific and technical publications on railroad subjects.
