Zoques are an indigenous group that lives in Oaxaca, Tabasco and Chiapas. In this social model, old age had been considered, for generations, an age that provided power and status to rule with authority and traditional knowledge; this making a difference between female and male old age, privileging men. This was the case until recently, when young people and mature adults who are more educated, bilingual and have older and better relationships with the outside of their groups, have begun to look differently and question the older members of their community, even marginalizing them.
