The indigenous people of the town of Acayucan came to represent up to 60% of the total population in the mid-nineteenth century, but by the beginning of the twenty-first century their ancient community had disappeared. However, their tradition and culture survive in the neighboring towns in the surrounding area: among the Afro-mestizo people of Comején, the Popolucas of Quiamoloapan and Santa Rita Laurel, Apaxta, Monte Grande and Tecuanapa, in the peasant ranches near El Hato and Jalapa Calería. Here a series of popular tales are gathered, fragments of a culture collected with the intention of preserving history.
