Product information

This publication of the work of the Jesuit Juan Cigorondo “The tragedy entitled Oçio” –originally written to be performed in Puebla de los Ángeles in 1586–, is a critical and annotated edition by Julio Alonso Asenjo. This text works as a testimony of written theatre and is important to understand how the influence of the Society of Jesus had on Spanish and New Spain dramaturgy of the Golden Age. The theme of leisure, common in literature and frequent in Jesuit dramaturgy, is used by Cigorondo to teach the students, to whom the work is addressed, about the harmful effects of this vice that affects society in general; this is a moral lesson and a satire of New Spain society.
